Chapter 1 - Summary

The first chapter of the dystopian science fiction novel “Never Let Me Go” from 2005 is written by Kazuo Ishiguro and takes place in the late 1990s in London. The Story is written from the point of view of Katy H from Hailsham the main character.

At first, the 31-year-old carer Katy mentions her donors and that she has to be a carer for another eight months so that she will be a carer for twelve years in total. She continues with stories from her career as a carer and talks about the donors she can remember and she has taken care of them. For example, she tells about the donor Ruth, which was also a student in Hailsham with her. Furthermore, she talks about her memories about her childhood to another donor so that he can endure his pains. Next, while she is driving around the country she sees a sports pavilion and tells the reader one memory in which her friend group is looking down to the North Playing Field where some boys are playing football while making fun of Tommy. Even though Tommy is the best player he is selected at last. Tommy couldn’t handle the situation and gets a tantrum. After the boys went away and the time is slowly running out the girls group with Katy went to the main building, Katy reports. Katy continues her story of that memory that she went to Tommy to stop him because he got mud on his new shirt. The chapter and the memory from Katy ends with Tommy hitting her by accident.

The next days Katy informs her about the incidents that happen to Tommy and the pranks that happen almost daily. As Katy points out that the pranks to Tommy are unfair Katy agrees but brings up that he didn’t had something for the Spring Exchange. The narrator interrupts her story and explains that there are four Exchanges in a year and that everyone prepares stuff like paintings, drawings or poetry for it to sell their things to the other students of your year. Afterwards, she tells from conservation between Ruth and her which they had in Ruth’s recovery room after her first donation in which they talked about memories from the Exchanges. Then the narrator continues her story about Tommy. She says that everything has started in an art class with Miss Geraldine. Furthermore she describes that Tommy painted a childish elephant as a joke and that would be no problem if the guardian wouldn’t have tried to find something good in the picture and wouldn’t have pointed it out. Katy continues that the tantrums has made it more worse but as tommy started to ignore the pranks they lost interest. During waiting in the lunch queue Katy congratulates Tommy to his success of stopping the bullying. Because the answer how he could stop it doesn’t convince Katy walks away but in the end when Tommy says to her that he would tell it to her after lunch she gets curious.

To put it in a nutshell Katy explains the Exchanges and talks about how the bullying of Tommy started and how it ended.

Furthermore, Tommy continues that it helped him with his tantrums because whehe was shortly before one he could see her walking about and that helped to calm down. Also Tommy thinks that Miss Lucy has the opinion that the studentaren’t told enough about what will happen to them. Normally the assembly every morning is very short but if Miss Emily has to talk it takes round about 20 to 30 minutes. In contrast to her lessons where she is very precise, her speeches are hard to understand. The Sales which are every month, are an exciting event for junior students but usually they only buy things replace old ore broken stuff. Then the Kathy tells about the beginning of her friendship with Ruth, where Ruth allows her to play with her invisible horses. She is very determinative. From then on they ‘protect’ Miss Geradline, because Ruth says someone wants to harm her and she needs their protection.

Chapter 5 - Summary

The dystopian science fiction Novel “Never Let Me Go” from 2005 is written by Kazuo Ishiguro and takes place in the late 1990s in London. The Story is written from the point of view of Katy H from Hailsham the main character.

As Kathy joins the group, the other already knew the ‘secret guard’ game. In Hailsman horror stories about the outside like the woods or behind the fence exist. Ruth hints that she can play chess by commentating other chess player’s decisions until Katy finds out that Ruth lied by buying a chess board and asking her how to play. Katy is disappointed. Moreover Ruth keeps the secret guard play going through say things in a special voice so that everyone knows she means something related to Miss Geradline. That nerves Kathy, so she pretended that she found Ruth’s name on the Sales register at which every purchase is logged, and confronts her, that she didn’t get her special pencil case as a gift for protecting. Ruth get sad and Kathy immediately show compassion and asks herself, if not everybody wants a little bit attention from his or her favourite guardian.

Chapter 6 - Summary

On the 15 pages from chapter six from “Never Let Me Go” published 2005 by Kazuo Ishiguro Kathy proceeds her story about Ruth being nice and a special cassette. Let’s go into detail.

At first, the first-person-narrator hints her best friend that she won’t leave the lie. Therefore Ruth is especially friendly the next days. Before the narration is continued the popular Norfolk joke is explained. In geographic class Miss Emily shows many pictures of the surrounding of Hailsham but she hasn’t shown any photograph of Norfolk as it wouldn’t exist so it is referred as “a lost corner”. Also the guardians are warning before the consequences of smoking and that it is very important to stay healthy. Miss Lucy says after she was asked that she’d been smoking for a short period but stopped. She underlines that Hailsham students are special. Then finally Kathy talks about the third track on the cassette which is called “Never let me go” from the album “Songs After Dark” by Judy Bridgewater (1956). She describes it as different in comparison to the other music which is listen to at Hailsham. Moreover she say that she hasn’t had many opportunities to listen the song because there are only a few devices and they are at positions where other students hang out. Furthermore, she imagines that the singer can’t have a baby and holds one while singing, “oh baby never let me go”. One time she plays this situation as she catches sight of Miss Madame who is standing in the door frame and cries. As she reports it to Tommy his response is that she was sad for her, because all Hailsham students aren’t able to have children. No one is really bothered that they can have sex without worrying about babies. Two months later the cassette gets lost and Kathy is upset. As a replacement and thanking her for keeping the secret Ruth, who doesn’t care much about music, gifts her another tape, not knowing that the song is important to her not any music. But because Ruth really thought about it Kathy likes the new cassette also a lot but doesn’t listen to it much.

In conclusion, the chapter ends with a happy Kathy.

Chapter 7 - Summary

Kathy discusses the last years at Hailsham in Chapter seven of the dystopian science fiction novel “Never Let Me Go” from 2005 by Kazuo Ishiguro.

By the age of 15 at some time, when they are in the sports pavilion, Miss Lucy hears conservation between two boys Peter J. and Gordon talking about becoming an actor. Furthermore, she interrupts them, because she states the opinion the students aren’t being told and not told. In conclusion and that she can’t be quiet anymore she tells them about their set outlive as donors of vital organs. Kathy agrees with her that they are told and not. As an example, she instances the sex talk by Miss Emily in which they are told they should avoid diseases, can’t have babies, that sex affects emotions and out of Hailsham sex has a much bigger significance. In this move, they should be told about their later life. Later on, in Kathy’s narration, she elucidates how Tommy gets fouled by Christopher. For all students, health is extremely important and as Tommy gets a gash on his elbow Christopher convinces him with the help of other students agreeing that it can unzip. In the end, the unzipping evolves to a running joke that no one connects with Tommy anymore.

To put it in a nutshell Miss Lucy confirms Kathy’s feeling about not being told enough and Tommy gets fouled.

Chapter 8 - Summary

She doesn’t know how to handle the situation and leaves. Tommy and Ruth are a couple and are arguing the last six months. Kathy feels like on the one hand, the guardian encourages the students to have sex but not in school or at their dorm and the fields aren’t an option either so they have no opportunities. As an anecdote, Kathy narrates that gay sex is called ‘umbrella sex’ and being gay is referred to be an umbrella. Finally, Kathy chooses Harry C. to have sex with and gives him signals but in the end she doesn’t.

Mediation about the development of “Never Let Me Go”

The synopsis “The creation of ‘Never Let Me Go’” (“Die Entstehung von ‘Never Let Me Go’”) from 4 March 2019 based on an article by theguardian.com concentrates on the process, development and idea gathering for Kazuo Ishiguro’s dystopian novel.

In the beginning, he starts with text fragments about a group of students in an unusual environment of old barn cottages that all share one fate without naming it while writing totally different books.

Then one year later, as he listens to a radio show about the biological technological achievements, although he isn't really interested in, the ideas slowly compose to a story.

Because the author doesn’t want to write a futuristic novel, which could be understood as an interpretation of the future, he lets his story take place in the 70s to 80s in the beautiful remote landscapes and som connected cities from England.

In addition, he says he didn’t go to boarding school but orientates his story on narrations because the first part takes place there. Furthermore, he describes that thinking like a teenager isn’t so difficult for him. He uses the boarding school as a metaphor for the separation from children to the world of adults because they leave out information to them.

Moreover, a big factor is the use of clones as central characters. They let him ask the oldest questions about the human existence, the soul and dedication of the human species in a modern way.

At last, as he finishes his book, not without throwing whole parts away, he gets the feeling, that novel is his happiest he ever wrote.

Life at Hailsham

Students

The Students from Hailsham are already seniors from 13 up to 16 when they leave. In their dorm they all have their own collection chest. Tommy a friend from Kathy and a students is easily to upset to that he gets many tantrums.

Guardians

The guardians teach and aren’t allowed to a favour student. Miss Geraldine is a soft spoken, gentle guardian who’s everyone’s favourite and teaches art class. Miss Emily, the head guardian, is older than all the others and respected for her fair decisions. She teaches sex education. Miss Lucy, is appreciate for her brisk style by the Seniors.

Activities

The students get almost medication every week. In lectures about smoking the guardians repeat how dangerous it is and how important it is to stay healthy. Generally the student pretend to have more sex than they really have and like in every school rumours exit and are being spread.

Housing and grounds

It’s protected with a fence in a smooth hollow with fields around and a long road to the gate. The living space of the guardians are in the orangery. There’s a path around all buildings and a rose at the top of the hill behind the Hailsham House. In every junior dorm 15 students have to sleep.

Characterization of Kathy H.

The main protagonist and first-person narrator from “Never Let Me Go” by Kazuo Ishiguro published in 2006 is Kathy H. This characterization focusses on her character traits in part two where she lives in the Cottages.

In time where they stay at the Cottages Kathy is 16 up to 18 until she applies for her training as a carer. Her best friends are Tommy and Ruth, also from Hailsham. She sleeps with Hughie, Lenny and some other at one-nighters. Sometimes Kathy has the urge to have sex immediately. She chose Victorian novels for her essay but didn’t take the essays to serious. In Addition Kathy states her opinion, that she might be a clone from a prostitute.

At first Kathy show her skill of observing and seeing details. For example, she notices that the veterans adapted gestures from allowed television shows and Ruth does this too or she gets aware that there is a kind of taboo of talking about veterans who left. Another detail she sees is that Chrissie is beautiful when she stands straight, which Chrissie doesn’t notice. Also, she is an intelligent character which uses her free-time to educate herself with books like “Daniel Deronda”. Moreover, she’s good at taking care of others. A good example is that she gets aware of Tommy’s feelings when Ruth leaves him behind and he doesn’t know how to behave which makes him uncomfortable ore when she doesn’t trust Chrissie and Rodney at first, she tries to be protective but as she knows them better she changes her mind which proves her intelligence. She argues with Ruth and is vulnerable but also tries to understand Ruth’s point of view which makes her empathically. Another proof would be that she plays down Tommy’s theory about the Gallery because he hasn’t anything in it. In Contrast to Ruth, Kathy keeps her collection chest. She’s loyal to her close friends. You notice this character trait when she knows that Ruth is lying but keeps the secret or when she confronts her to help Tommy out of his uncomfortable situation.

All in all, you see Kathy is a rather complex character with many positive character traits.

Add trustful, curious and at least three quotations.

A Summary about cloning

The short informatic text "How cloning works" from June 2018 is written by Cornelia Kaminski and deals with the history of cloning, the future potential and explains it.

Cloning plants is used for hundreds of years but not until July 1996 cloning animals wasn't possible. After the 277th attempt, the scientists succeeded with cloning and named the Scottish sheep Dolly, which died due to arthritis, cancer and premature ageing in the earlies of 2002.

In the process of cloning, first, an unfertilized egg is needed and existing DNA material is removed to transfer DNA from the to be cloned suspect. Next, the cell dividing process is started by stimulating with electricity. Then the resulting embryo is transplanted into a surrogate mother which later gives birth to the clone.

Today American cloning companies replicate very productive animals.

One of the big flaws of cloning is the faster ageing process of clones, that higher mortality rate and the accompanying abnormalities.

From then on the scientists continued cloning animals and 2018 Chinese scientists accomplished cloning 2 primates out of 3 hundred which are relatives to us, humans. Therefore the ethical question of cloning humans has risen. the creator of Dolly, Jan Wilmet, answers it in 2001 by saying that not until the issues of nuclear cloning are resolved, it would be dangerous and irresponsible because it would lead to abnormal children and adults which are troubling outcomes. But later in 2004, he applied for a licence for human cloning probably to research more for the great benefits of cloning where the shortage of organs for transplantation could be resolved by growing organs from stem cells.

Until this future, scientists need to overcome the high risk of the transferred cells to become tumours due to their fas cell grow / multiply.

Overall it's a complex topic which needs more research and ethical arguments rounds that comes to a conclusion for our society.
